High-tech crime (computer crime) is the use of technology to commit a crime. It is the biggest tech related threat to the society. According to the 2011 Norton Cybercrime Report, in 2010 more than 430 million adults were victimized at a cost of US$388-billion in direct and indirect losses from computer crime world wide. The direct financial losses from cybercrime stood at US$114 billion, while US$274 billion was the value of time that victims spent in solving the crimes [1]. High-tech crimes include identity theft, cyber-stalking, hacking confidential systems, pyramid schemes, planting harmful viruses, and many others. Identity theft is a form of fraud in which someone pretends to be someone else by assuming that person’s identity. There are five types of identity theft criminal, financial, medical, child, and identity cloning. Criminal identity theft is when a criminal identifies himself as another person when the police arrest him. Not only does the criminal escape, but also he victim may encounter problems for months and even years because of the incorrect criminal records. Financial identity theft is using another person’s identity credit, goods, and services. Medical Identity theft is using a person’s name or insurance information to get medical services/goods or just to make false claims. Child identity theft on the other hand is using a child’s Security Number for personal gains. Identity cloning on the other hand is to assume the identity of another person for daily life. Cyber-bullying is the use of modern technology (mostly the internet) to harm people on purpose. New bullying statistics revealed that around half of teens with Internet access have been the victims of cyber bullying [2]. Cyber-bullying can lead to depression and even suicide. Unlike physical bullying, cyber-bullies can remain anonymous and the bullying can continue all day every day. Many think cyber-bullying only happens to children, but it also happens to adults, which is known as cyber-stalking. Cyber-stalking includes making threats, gathering information about the victim, encouraging others to harass, false accusations, requesting minors for sex, false victimization, and ordering good/services in the victim’s name. Hacking is when a person accesses a computer or a network without the owner’s consent. The most common hacker targets are government agencies, business networks, bank security systems, insurance providers, and hospital networks. Some hack personal/organization computers to plant harmful viruses that can destroy entire systems. While some hack private computers to obtain personal information such as pictures and credit card number. Others hack bank security systems to illegally obtain money (also known as defrauding). Other reasons for hacking are creating public attention for oneself, illegal subscription, and altering or obtaining classified information. And even though security systems are being improved, so is hacking. Other major high tech-crimes include drug trafficking, cyber terrorism, and cyber warfare. Drug dealers are taking advantage of the Internet and other technologies to sell illegal drugs. And the lack of face-to-face communication causes an increase of Internet drug trade. Cyber terrorism is the act of terrorism through the use of cyberspace. Cyber warfare, which is considered one of the most controversial and threatening high-tech crimes, is the act of sabotage and espionage through politically motivated hacking. Problem Solving Essay In my efforts to solve a problem I have often begun by identifying the one issue that affects me and focus on the individual tasks that led to the problem attempting to use logical and critical thinking. I have hit upon the realization that this focus works well with simpler problems that need immediate clarification but it has proven appropriate that problems that are more difficult and require a more long-term and elaborate answer requires the use of a Systems Thinking approach. My failure to seek broad, long-term solutions has me stamping out grass fires while my house burns down. I have adopted Daniel Aronson ideas on systems thinking to aid in keeping â€Å"the big picture† when developing solutions. Critical and creative thinking processes are required when solving problems using systems thinking but I see the concentration shift from breaking down and examining individual tasks to studying how various system tasks shape both that system and the other systems in which it interacts. When using systems thinking, essential in arriving to an amicable and effective end state are the realizations that must be shared by the solution seekers. To which all players must realize that their roles affect other stakeholders and the desired outcome. Each seeker should study how past solutions have added to a problem and therefore any steps to correct a current problem should be evaluated for negative results and creation of other problems. Crucial too is the required realization that the desired end outcome is affected by outside influences which may not be obvious, controllable or correctable. Regarding the Army’s seven step problem solving process I make the following contribution and observations based on my â€Å"tacit† experience acquired during my career and specifically in completing capstone courses on decision making and development of thinking skills. 1. Identify the problem. This is where I find that people have to be hit in the face before they acknowledge a problem exists. In most instances awareness of a problem exists but is met with apathy unless someone is significantly impacted. But once ownership is taken a great idea is to concisely define the problem and state your desired outcome. Only then can I begin to look for solutions. If I don’t know where I am are going how will I know when I get there? 2. Gather information. Paraphrasing Confucius and Donald Rumsfeld’s thought on the unknown, finding out what I don’t know and then searching for someone who does is always my first choice. I then use that shared knowledge and direction to ensure I am considering the right information and possibly additional differing views of the problem on my path to a solution. 3. Develop Criteria In my development of tests to judge a solution I like to ensure every solution can be judged in using the same standard. I believe â€Å"there is more than one way to skin a cat,† so I want each solution to be fairly judged against the same criteria and not against other solutions. Having several solutions gives me flexibility in later steps. I have often used Substance, Relevance, Timeliness, Simplicity, and gotten good results. 4. Generate Solutions. During this step I have used a variety of methods to come up with solutions. Using established methods and techniques helps to capture and hopefully solidify ideas. Fishbone, Flow Chart, Cause and effect, are a few of many available. I use these same techniques later in step 6. I think at this point whatever method you may select the main goal is to get ideas flowing. My preferred method is brainstorming, by trying different and sometimes combinations of techniques I have found what works best for me. Also important in this step is establishing an open and non-judgmental environment where no solution team member holds back any idea no matter how â€Å"out there† it may seem. That idea might be the one that leads to an innovative answer. 5. Analyze possible solutions. Though each step is working off the ones that come before it I find this step to be the most dependent on the effort and results of all the previous steps. The old axiom â€Å"trash in – trash out† becomes apparent if I half-stepped through the proceeding steps. If I have spent the proper time and effort on steps 1-4 I discovered this one is the easiest to complete. 6. Compare Possible Solutions. In this step I go back to the techniques I mentioned in step 4. My preference is to use a Cause and Effect matrix that helps me to develop action alternatives and the outcome results of each solution. I also revert to my â€Å"go-to† test criteria and determine which solution best meets the exact or multiple criterion I feel are the most important to the particular situation. 7. Make and implement solutions. During the make phase of this step, frequently my role is as one who played a major role in completing the previous phases and is now presenting a plan for verdict and usually I am advocating an individual alternative. In this phase it is imperative for me to communicate and advise decision makers with confidence. If I am tentative in my recommendations buy in and implementation may not happen. Impressions of The Awakening I liked "The Story of an Hour" much better than I liked "The Awakening" for a few reasons. First of all, "The Awakening" was entirely too long to say what it had to say. I do not really understand the point of having Edna spend all of that time away from Robert. At first, I thought it was to prove how much she missed him, but then she started fooling around with the other guy. To me, this does not indicate that she missed him very much at all. So what was the point of that whole boring part of the story? It made me want Robert to hurry up and come back so we could get on with it (which I guess Edna was thinking the whole time). Then when he does come back, they admit their love for one another, but they still are not together. I guess the ending just kind of pissed me off. I don't get the point in her "waking up" and being free to do whatever she feels, but she still cannot be with Robert. Another thing I did not like was the constant references to waking up and awakenings. I think that when a story is really good, you need to think about it, whereas this story just comes right out and tells you where the turning point is. It was obvious to me by that point when she learns to swim that this will be a turning point in her life, so I don't like the fact that Chopin practically spells it out for us.I do like the fact that, Chopin, living in the times that she did, had the courage to make such a stink! I liked the part where Edna is lying in the hammock, and her husband is yelling at her to come inside to go to bed while she stubbornly refuses.However, Chopin ruins it for me by telling us that Edna makes a conscious decision never to obey her husband against her will again. I think the portrayals of Edna's two friends serve to contrast what she is(or society believes that she should be) with what she will become.
